Quintus Horatius Flaccus (Horace)

Born in 8.12.65 before Christ in Venusia (today Venosa) in Apulia; 27.11.8 died before Christ in Rom. 

Horaz in Rome had an excellent education. Literary and philosophical studies in Rome and Athens, he was with honors. After Caesar's assassination, he joined 23 years old Philippi (42 before Christ) as commander of the army of Brutus. 

After the defeat of Philippi (42 before Christ), he worked as a clerk in Rome. Finally, he was 38 before Christ by Virgil and Varius at Maecenas. He received as a gift a farm. After the death of Virgil (19 before Christ ), became he that successors. 

Through the literary works of Horace was the epitome of the lyric poet, each poem is a certain thematic area assigned: mood pictures, love scenes, political poetry, landscape descriptions and people characteristics. Hardly a Roman poet - the Elegiker (elegy-poet) Properz excluded - was of Goethe, Schiller, the romantic and the French poets such as Verleine, Baudelaire and others as much as Horace.

In his two books Episteln (letters) learns the art of letters to actual or fictitious addressed its highest completion. Horace also has a literary genre for the completion, the only no Greek model, but a genuine (pure unadulterated language) Roman invention, the satire: in two books he has written 18 satires, whose perfection later generations could only dream.
