Marcel Gromaire is more well-known
in France as abroad; strict, monumental forms and dark color harmonies are
characteristic for his pictures. His father was Frenchman, his mother Belgian.
He visited the Lycee Buffon and and
studied then two years law; at the same time he visited the free academies,
especially the academy
de la palette, where he received from Le Fauconnier advice
and encouragement. He participated in the first war, was wounded and with that
Croix de Guerre excellently. From the war Gromaire began to paint that sujets,
which should become characteristic of him: typically Flemish workers, woodcutter,
dock labourer, map player, everything in a dark expressionism style. He created
also many act pictures, for which it compiled position and composition in
numerous sketches; he broad, serious figures show that characteristic enormous
weight and firmness.
Gromaire
is also an important engraver; in addition it worked together with Lurcat on the
renewal of the wall carpet art in the tapestry manufactory of Aubusson.
Gromaire
became famous however with its picture the war of 1925, which was issued in the
salon of the Indépendents in the same year and extraordinary success had; it
reminds in inexorable and urgent kind of the frights of the war this work bought
Dr. Girardin, who remained also further a faithful sponsor Gromaires.
