Jorn, Asger (AsgerJorgensen)
born: 1914 Vejrum, Denmark
died: 1973 Aarhus, Denmark

Asger Jorn was a representative of Abstract Expressionism in Europe and a co-founder of the Cobra group. His early paintings, of 193o to 1935, were landscapes and portraits that bore traits of Scandinavian Expressionism in the wake of Edvard Munch. Jorn's style changed in 1936-1937, when he collaborated with Fernand Léger and Le Corbusier in Paris and was strongly influenced by the Surrealist imagery of Max Ernst and the fabulous creatures of Paul Klee. Using the Surrealist technique of automatism, Jorn was able to tap the wellsprings of imagery in the subconscious mind and reveal hidden aspects of human experience. His euvre was suffused by the ideas and traditions of Nordic mythology and legends, in which all manner of grotesque demons, hobgoblins and trolls play an important role. Jorn's Mugwump of 1957 shows just such a fantastic creature, part human, part beast, rendered with rapid, agitated strokes of garish color. Apart from painting, Jorn also occasionally made collages. In the years 1967-1969, the period to which Untitled dates, these were done by the technique known as décollage, sections of posters torn off encrusted hoardings and recombined. In this regard Jorn was evidently influenced by artists such as Mimmo Rotella and Francois Dufrene. Like his oils, Jorn's collages are primarily abstract in character, yet with suggestions of objective reference which, despite their ambiguity, trigger strong visual associations in the viewer's mind.
