Cartier Bresson Henri  1908-2004,  French Photographer

Biography   

 The famous photographer Henri Cartier Bresson was born 1908 in Chanteloup at the Seine-et-Marne.     

He studied of 1927 until 1929 in Paris painting. The cubist artists André Lhote and the portraitist Jacques Emile Blanche belonged to his teachers.   

 He leaves France in the year 1931, goes to Africa to the Ivory Coast, where he dedicates itself to the photography. These photographs are issued in the following year for the first time in the gallery, Julien Levy, New York.    

 1934 he visits for one-year Mexico. He went into the poor and artist quarter. With these photos Henri Cartier-Bresson got  international acknowledgment.
 In this exhibition are to be seen some of these photos from Mexico. They became as heliogravures of the publisher Teriade, 4, Rue Férou (6e), Paris, in the 1. and 2. Verve expenditure of 1937und 1938 the international public presented.
    

In the following years he develops consistently his photographer activity. His experiences which he between 1936 and 1939 as an assistant of Jean Renoir, arranged him his first own documentary film “La victoire de la vie” made over hospitals in the Spanish civil war to turn.   

1937 visited CARDINAL PARCELLI Paris, 1939 to the Pope, Pius XII. (1939-58), one selected. It is a famous photo of Bresson, which as heliogravure of the publisher Teriade, 4, Rue Férou (6e) is to be likewise seen, Paris, VERVE N° 5-6, 1939, in this exhibition.    

 1940 during the Second World War came Henri Cartier Bresson into German captivity, where he succeeded escaped in 1943. In Paris it followed the resistance against the German occupation. All documented he and turned 1945 for the American war Ministry (department of war information) the film “The Return”, over the dramatic return of the French prisoners of war and the deportee prisoners.   

 In a report of the family and the Agency Magnum Photo, which he had created, it was announced that he deceased on Tuesday, 3 August 2004, at 9 o'clock 30 in his house Luberon in Cereste (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) and burying on Wednesday, which 4 August 2004 took place in accordance with his previous order on the cemetery of Montjustin (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence).
