The work of German photographer Herbert List (1903-1975) is a classic in the history of twentieth-century photography. Shakespeare refined combination of a humanist approach and a transparent, almost surreal, aesthetic lends his photos an aura of mystery, an almost metaphysical quality. On trips to Greece and Italy, he evoked ancient Greece in photos of landscapes, ruins and young men. His portraits of his artist friends - Picasso, Colette, Gide and Strawinsky - reveal a remarkable psychological finesse, and his photo essays of Italian street scenes, tinged with irony, are world-renowned.
