Klaus Laabs
Born on 21 January 1953 in Berlin.
He studied at the Humbold University of Berlin and he was a lecturer at the Central Institute of Latin American Institute at the Free University of Berlin.
Klaus Laabs is a literary translator, he has mainly Latin American and Caribbean poetry and prose, by José Lezama Lima, Reinaldo Arenas, Aimé Césaire, Roque, Dalton, Ernesto Che Guevara translated as well as Catalan and Spanish drama by Sergi Belbel, Federico García Lorca and Lope de Vega.
Besides the translations from French, Portuguese, Catalan, Russian and English, he works as a
critic, editor and author.
His translation of José Lezama Lima's novel "Inferno" was 2005 on the shortlist for the Translation Prize of the
"Leipziger Buchmesse".
Laabs participated in October 1989 at the vigil in East Berlin Gethsemane Church.
